jhardycarroll I was blown away by the musicality and emotion of these songs. There is quite literally nothing like it. One song will have the edgy quality of Mike Watt, and the next will venture into the territory of Ornette's collaborator Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Lowell's ear for melody entwines with unexpected chordal and harmonic choices. I can hear in his compositions the influence of Mingus, but also of Kim Gordon. This record is a treat, and I can attest that more you listen to it the better it gets. Favorite track: Too Stupid to Quit.

fredroth1967 I’ve been listening to Lowell Levene-Sims for years and this is his best work yet. I enjoyed every track but track three “Taking Up Serpents” was the track I was most fond of. In this track you’ll hear the convergence of the melodic as well as the rhythm in its mist beautiful form. Truly a highlight for me.

Track 5 is a blast of electricity for the soul. Let this music linger in your room long enough and understand true artistry! Favorite track: Taking Up Serpents.

about

This is the record I have been wanting to make for as long as I can remember. This is the way you play when you’re sitting in your room giving zero fucks about anything but the vibe and where it takes you. From the moment I picked up my first bass and cautiously plunked out a few notes, I set off down an extremely strange, often humorous, sometimes dark and complex path that has led me to this place.

Though I was susceptible to herd mentality and generally naïve and impressionable early on in my playing journey, I somehow managed to avoid indoctrination into the apotheosis of mainstream bass guitar. I won’t kid you - there were times I so badly wanted to be part of that club, but it just never felt right. I had to go it alone.

I’m glad I trusted myself.

Now about the record…

If you are looking for perfect, uber-virtuostic solo bass stuff… I ain’t your guy. See below.

All but one of these songs are first takes. The varying tones from ugly and unsettling to beautiful and comforting, the room sounds, the string noise, the lack of a click track, the squeaking chair, my breathing, random noises that I can’t identify, the coffee consumed, the general vibe of being in the middle of nowhere in an incredible studio with an engineer who just flat out “gets it” - culminated in a record that I think is incredibly authentic and unique and one that I am very proud of.
